Peanut The Squirrel Is Gone And Everything Is Worse Now

It was a tale of two internets this week, as both "normie" and "deep internetters" had wild memes to celebrate, but there was very little overlap.

Peanut the Squirrel, also known as P'Nut, was a pet eastern grey squirrel owned by content creator Mark Longo and his wife Daniela Longo, who ran an Instagram account dedicated to the animal. In addition to Peanut, Longo also owned a North American raccoon named Fred the Raccoon. In late October 2024, both the squirrel and raccoon were euthanized to test for rabies by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYDEC) after they were seized from Longo's home and Peanut reportedly bit someone involved in the investigation. The killing of the two animals, particularly Peanut, resulted in a wave of mass coverage and outrage online (similar to Harambe) as the two pets became the subject of numerous memes, fan art depictions and discussions online.

AI-Generated Minecraft refers to a product launched by Etched in partnership with DecartAI in late October 2024. Introduced as Oasis, the first playable AI-generated game, the product shows a crude control panel and a screen displaying a game almost identical to Minecraft. Many internet users played Oasis in the days following its release, calling it "dementia Minecraft" and posting videos of the various ways in which the game glitches. The product garnered criticism, with some people mocking the company for claiming to have invented an AI-generated game by simply copying an existing one.

Johnny Somali's South Korea Hunt Down Controversy, also known as Johnny Somali's South Korea Arrest, refers to a series of physical altercations and mob attacks against the American Kick streamer and YouTuber Johnny Somali after he caused a significant backlash among South Koreans due to his disrespectful and provocative behavior while live-streaming in public spaces. The influencer has been actively hunted down by enraged Korean streamers since mid-October 2024, which led to him being arrested to protect him from the attacks of other Korean streamers. Online, Somali's hunt down became a viral topic on X and YouTube.
